None of these are rare events — over a decade of owning devices, most people experience at least one. The difference between a bad afternoon and a genuine loss is whether you had a backup.

The rule professionals use is called 3-2-1, and despite the jargon-y name it is simple: keep three copies of anything important, on two different kinds of storage, with one of them somewhere else. Here is what that looks like in a normal home.
