Pressed the button and nothing? Rule out power, display, and a stuck state before panicking.
Involved⏱ 10–30 minWindowsMac
"Won't turn on" covers several very different problems: no power at all, power but a black screen, or starting and then shutting off. Each has different causes, and most of them are not a dead computer.
Start by noticing exactly what happens when you press the power button: any lights, fan noise, chimes, or keyboard backlight? That tells you where to look.
Try these first — 30 seconds each
[ ]Plug in the charger and leave it for 15–30 minutes — a fully drained battery may not respond right away.
[ ]Check the charger light and try a different wall outlet.
[ ]Turn the screen brightness up; the computer may be on with the display at zero.

1
Confirm power is reaching it
Look for a charging light on the laptop or charger brick. Try a different outlet and, if possible, a different compatible charger. For desktops, check the switch on the back of the power supply and the power strip.
2
Do a power reset
Laptop with removable battery: unplug, remove battery, hold power for 30 seconds, reinsert, try again. Sealed laptops: unplug and hold power for 15–30 seconds. This drains residual charge that can leave the power controller stuck.
3
Rule out the display
If you hear fans or see keyboard lights but the screen is black, connect an external monitor. If that shows a picture, the laptop screen or its cable is the problem, not the computer.
4
Disconnect everything
Remove USB drives, docks, SD cards, and external displays. A faulty accessory can stop a machine from starting.
5
Mac-specific reset
Apple silicon: hold the power button for 10 seconds, release, then press again. Intel Macs: try an SMC reset (on newer Intel laptops, hold Control + Option + Shift for 7 seconds, then add the power button for another 7).
6
If it starts then fails
If you see the logo and then an error or restart loop, Windows should offer Automatic Repair after two or three failed boots; Macs can boot into Recovery (hold the power button on Apple silicon until options appear). Use these to run disk repair or reinstall the system without erasing files.
Platform notes
Windows
A blinking caps-lock or power light in a pattern is often a diagnostic code; your model's support page explains what it means.
Mac
Apple Diagnostics (hold D at startup on Intel, or press and hold power then Command-D on Apple silicon) can test hardware.
Stop it happening again
Do not let a laptop sit fully drained for weeks — store it at around half charge.
Use a surge-protected power strip for desktops.
Keep regular backups so a hardware failure is an inconvenience, not a loss.
When to get professional help
If there are no lights or sounds with a known-good charger, or you smell burning, stop and contact the manufacturer or a repair shop. Liquid spills need professional cleaning quickly — do not keep trying to power it on.
This is general troubleshooting information for home users. Menus and settings differ between
device models and software versions. Back up important data before making changes, and contact
the manufacturer or an authorised repair provider for hardware faults or anything under
warranty.
